Wonderful Christmas – Wonderful God

Christmas is wonderful because God is wonderful! Corinne March reflects on the wonder of the Christmas story and the redemption Jesus brings.

Christmas

Christians and Christmas

Many Christians are divided on their view of Christmas.  For some of us, we’ve been looking forward to Christmas since July, or perhaps even earlier.  For others, Christmas is a chore, as we prepare our child for a part in the Christmas play, or dash around from store to store, trying to find that “right” gift.  For still many of us, Christmas is a time of deep pain or regret, as we reflect upon our fractured families, or broken relationships.

The Promise of Christmas

Yet underneath all of what Christmas is, and ever was, lies a promise.  Isaiah 9:6 “For unto us a child is born, unto us a son is given; and the government shall be upon his shoulder: and his name shall be called Wonderful, Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace.”

Wonderful Christmas, Wonderful God!

Wonderful.  God is wonderful.  Wonder is woven through the Christmas story.  Mary stood in wonder at the angel Gabriel, when he told her that she would bear in her womb “the Son of the Most High” (Luke 1:32), for she sang a song of praise in response (Luke 1:46-55).  The Shepherds were in a fearful wonder at the angels who presented themselves before them to declare the birth of the Saviour, for they were “filled with great fear” (Luke 2:9).

When he was presented at the temple, Simeon and Anna gazed in wonder at the child, for it had been revealed to them by the Holy Spirit that he was the Messiah (Luke 2:22-38).  The wise men, who had been sent by Herod to seek out and advise him of the child’s whereabouts, instead worshiped him in wonder when they saw him, showered him with gifts, and specifically obeyed divine instruction to not tell Herod(Matthew 2:7-12).

Reflect Upon the Wonder of Christmas

Our Lord, by His very nature, invokes wonder in us.  Just as those who witnessed His coming into the world two millennia ago, we can also look on him with wonder.  Through the busyness of this Christmas time, let us stop and reflect upon the wonder that He is, the wonderful promise that He gave, and the wonderful redemption that we enjoy because of it.
