Ten Bible Verses About Hope.
We need Bible verses about hope to combat the onslaught of depressing news about wars, pandemics, market crashes and more. Here are a few.
We Need Hope
For most of us, the world seems like an increasingly scary place. Every day our news headlines are filled with stories about war, pandemics, market instability, global warming, violent crimes and more. Websites, social media and television broadcasts constantly bombard us with news that can at times seem to cripple us with fear. Our advanced technology swamps and overwhelms us with the latest frightening stories and it might seem that we must live in the most frightening era in the history of the human race.
We may wonder if God has forgotten about this tiny blue marble in the vast expanses of the universe. Or perhaps we ask if God cares or even exists.
What the Bible Says About Hope
Despite the troubling times, God does exist and He does care about us, even when we might feel lost and alone without any hope for the future. He cares about this world, and He cares about us as individuals.
In fact, the scriptures include many verses that talk about hope. These verses can reassure us, ease our anxiety, refresh our souls and help us renew our faith in God.
In the following list, which although far from exhaustive, you will find a few of the most well known and helpful verses that have encouraged and sustained followers of Jesus for centuries. Even when they had to endure the most awful circumstances that we can imagine.
1. God’s Word is Full of Hope
I wait for the Lord, my whole being waits, and in his word I put my hope.
Psalm 130:5 NIV
There is no doubt that God fully intends to restore mankind into a deeply meaningful and satisfying relationship with Him. God loves us, and His message of hope is woven deep into the story of God and man.
We will search vainly for hope in all in people and places. However, a hope that lasts, and makes us feel truly at peace, can only be found in God’s Word. From beginning to end the scriptures are full of a message of hope.
2. God Has Plans For You
For I know the plans I have for you,” declares the Lord, “plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.
Jeremiah 29:11 NIV
When it seems like we have no future in this world or indeed that our planet itself has no future, God intervenes to remind us that we are part of His plans. Not only that, He has a specific plan for each one of us. There need be no fear that there is no future for us.
Without doubt, our future is written by the very hand of God. It is in Him then, that we find hope when our world seems to be coming crashing in all around us. Hope in God, and you will have hope for the future.
3. God Has Eternity Mapped Out
So we fix our eyes not on what is seen, but on what is unseen, since what is seen is temporary, but what is unseen is eternal.
II Corinthians 4:18 NIV
Everything around us is temporary. Our lives, our families, our positions and our possessions, all are temporary. Even this planet that we live on is temporary and can vanish in but a moment of time, if and when God wills it. Where do we find hope, then? We find hope in the eternal promises of God. Our future as followers of Jesus is tied to the great plan of salvation established by God before the foundation of this world.
4. God’s Hope Encourages Us
For everything that was written in the past was written to teach us, so that through the endurance taught in the Scriptures and the encouragement they provide we might have hope.
Romans 15:4 NIV
How can we be confident in God’s promises to us? He has shown us His faithfulness in the ages past. The lives of the patriarchs and many other great historical characters are recorded for us in the scriptures.
This cast of historical giants is without comparison in literature. Their lives, including both their astonishing highs and depressing lows are written to encourage and motivate us.
If this great panoply of people, both great and small can witness to the workings of God in their lives, we can be confident that He is working in our lives too. Our faith, like theirs, might be weak at times. Our errors, outright sins and failures might seem to great for us to bear, but God has redeemed and brought hope to many a hopeless individual within the pages of scripture. He can do the same for us.
5. We Hope in God’s Love Which is Greater Than Fear
There is no fear in love. But perfect love drives out fear, because fear has to do with punishment. The one who fears is not made perfect in love. We love because he first loved us.
I John 4:18-19 NIV
This world breeds fear. It is all around us. It surrounds us. It swarms us in the darkest hours, and during the most frightening dreams of the night. There are days when the sun seems to disappear and we feel almost paralyzed by the horrors of the day’s news.
But God does not want us to live in constant fear. He has demonstrated the greatest love imaginable for us through the sacrifice of the sinless Jesus Christ, His Son, our Messiah on the cross at Calvary. Jesus passed through all the greatest fears and nightmares that a human could possibly bear in the Garden of Gethsemane leading up to His intensely horrifying death. Yet, He passed through the other side and arose victorious from death.

6. God Wants us to Know He is Near
Let your gentleness be evident to all. The Lord is near. Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.
Philippians 4:5-7 NIV
It can be deeply discouraging to feel lonely. However, even when we feel alone and are going through times of doubt, worries and fear, the Lord is still near. We may not see Him, but He is there, and He is only a prayer away.
He calls us to call Him. We are invited to bring every anxious situation to Him. He promises to replace the fear in our hearts with His peace. It is a peace that is greater than we can imagine, and it protects us from all that the world can bring. When countries are at war, they long for peace. Likewise, when the enemy attacks our hearts with fear and doubt, we need the peace that only God gives us.
7. God is sovereign over everything – even your circumstances
And we know that in all things God works for the good of those who love him, who have been called according to his purpose.
Romans 8:28 NIV
Sometimes it seems that our world has lost all sense of reason. Marriages end. Families fall apart. Societies disintegrate. Violence erupts.
These are the times that, whether it is our personal world, or the world that we live in, we experience the sense everything is spiraling out of control. We wonder what we can possibly do to right the sinking ship or prevent the coming storms. There does not appear to be any good reason for what is happening and wonder what good can possibly come out of the situation.
Yet God promises the opposite. He has a purpose for everything. When our faith is in Him, when we see Him as the source of all hope, the world begins to make sense again. Even in the middle of the darkest times.
8. Our Hope Will be Complete
…being confident of this, that he who began a good work in you will carry it on to completion until the day of Christ Jesus.
Philippians 1:6 NIV
The life of a Christian usually begins with newfound joy and excitement. We sense that God is real and is at work in our lives in a way that we never dreamed of. We dream dreams and are blessed with holy visions. We forge ahead in our new faith confident in the knowledge that God is with us, transforming us, and that victories and triumphs are just around then corner.
Then there are times when reality sets in. We understand the depth of our sinfulness. The walls seem to be closing in on us and our own failures and sinful choices drag us down. Worries overwhelm us and we even question our own salvation when we bring disasters on ourselves by our poor choices. We wonder if God has really saved us or if it is just our imagination. We question whether God has lost interest in us.
But God is not interested in quick fixes. He knows the depths of our failures and weaknesses. Nevertheless, He has chosen a path that will bring about our ultimate salvation. He has committed Himself to a lifelong project of character reformation that will end when we meet Jesus – perfected for eternity. We must be patient and confident in God’s promise.
9. Hope in God Brings Joy
Be joyful in hope, patient in affliction, faithful in prayer
Romans 12:12 NIV
Fear brings torment. Fear brings worry and depression. Fear brings out the worst in us. Fear causes us to lash out in pain and hurt others.
Hope brings peace. Hope brings life. Hope brings strength. Hope brings joy.
Choose not to fear. Choose to hope in God and watch Him change your life.
10. Jesus is Our Living Hope
Praise be to the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ! In his great mercy he has given us new birth into a living hope through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead, and into an inheritance that can never perish, spoil or fade. This inheritance is kept in heaven for you, who through faith are shielded by God’s power until the coming of the salvation that is ready to be revealed in the last time
I Peter 1:3-5 NIV
Our lives are but a vapor. They are short, shorter even than we think – and often hard. However, God brings us into a living hope. The death and resurrection are the key. Jesus’ death paid the price for our sins and His resurrection means that we no longer need to fear death. Jesus is the resurrection and the life! Our hope rests in the One who has victory over death and Hell. Our hope is secure.

Hi Madarapu, thank you for your response. Our faith in God is essential for salvation. More specifically our faith in the Only Son of God, the Lord Jesus Christ, who died on the cross to pay the price for our sin. He did this out of His love for us. God is love. We have great hope because of our faith in God. I hope you found the “Ten Bible Verses About Hope” to be inspirational.
