Faith, Hope and Love
“ I have spoken of these matters in figures of speech, but soon I will stop speaking figuratively and will tell you plainly all about the Father.26 Then you will ask in my name. I’m not saying I will ask the Father on your behalf, for the Father himself loves you dearly because you love me and believe that I came from God.” John 16:25-27
In this section our Lord is pulling together all that he has been saying to His disciples on the night before His death. If we were to look on through the verses to the end of the chapter, we would notice that he speaks of faith, hope and love which are the tremendous blessings of the believer and result in peace.
Our World
It is obvious to all of us just how sad, bleak and sick our world really is. No one can ignore the despair of man, the lack of love, the perversion of love, the lack of something to really believe in and the lack of hope that is so obvious in the world in which we live. People today are desperate for love, in a Meaningful relationship, desperate for something in which they can believe and desperate for something to hope for.
People are desperate to know that they are not part of a computer system: to know that they have worth; and they are desperate in their search for a better answer than that which has been tried. A world in which inequalities are equalized; where injustices become just; where wrongs are put right. People would like to know for sure that life is just not a series of unconnected events. It is to this point that our Lord speaks to His disciples. Our Lord is saying that “man is, because god is”. The things that Men long for are exactly the things that are characterized by Christ: love, faith and hope.
Don’t Despair, God Loves You
Verse 27 tells us that this is true because we love Christ and believe that he came from God. Because of this God loves you. This is the answer to the despair that I spoke of a few minutes ago. This is the basis of our existence.
For the first time, as I have studied this passage again, I have been thrilled with the thought that this brings out. In John 3:16 we read “ that God so loved the world”… God loves everyone.. .but here it is a family love… God really likes you.. .God has a deep affection for His own.. .God keeps on loving you… it is a deep warm Fatherly affection.. .and you know, I just rejoice in both of these facts.
The Divine Love of God
The divine love of god for me, makes Him give everything to Me: in the name of Christ and for the glory of Christ. My friends, you just cannot be a Christian without having a tremendous sense of self value. You are the highest prize that god ever claimed in the whole universe. When angels sinned and fell, there was no redemption, there was no love to reach out and no arm to save. But even before man sinned, the sovereign purpose and plan of God was already in motion in order that man might be redeemed.
The love of God suffers long and is kind, the love of God may be outraged, disappointed and yet it flames and flashes and cries: “ how can I give thee up ? the love of God is so vast, many waters cannot quench it, nor floods overlow it. God’s love for a world of men and women, boys and girls is seen at Calvary. God so loved that he gave His only begotten Son.. .Christ came and died, He shed His blood, He bore in His own body your sins and mine, He paid the debt that I could not pay. .so that I could go free. By faith I see Him dying upon that cross, I hear His cry: “my God, my God why hast thou forsaken Me” and I know that it was for me: it was for me, for me alone, the Saviour left His dazzling throne: the glorious splendours of the sky, it was for me he came to die.
His Child – God Loves You
The moment you receive Jesus Christ as your Saviour, the Father loves you — yet in a different way. In verse 27 our Lord is saying to His disciples. The father Himself loveth you, because you have loved Me and have believed that I came from God. God loved them because they believed. When you accept the Lord Jesus Christ as your Saviour, God brings you into His family, He has a deep, warm fatherly affection for you, His child.
