The Wise Men Monologue.
One of the Wise Men shares a monologue, written a few years previously, in a marvelous piece of imagining by Carol Harrison.
A Wise Men Monologue
I wrote this monologue a number of years ago—looking at the Christmas story through the eyes of one of the Wise Men and decided to share it with the listeners today as we look towards celebrating the birth of Jesus almost 2000 years ago.
The Wise Man Speaks
(dressed richly, in long robes and a turban on his head, surrounded by charts and scrolls)
I am a magi from the East. Some people call me and my companions the wisemen. The multitude of twinkling stars in the night sky fascinate me, keeping me under their spell. As magi we study these stars and record our findings. Nothing new escapes our notice.
One night there was a new star – a bright star shining in the sky. It signified something special and very important. (looks down at his scroll) I conferred with my fellow wise men who had also seen this star. From all our studies it had to be the star that signified the birth of the King of the Jews. We decided that an event this important called for us to journey to the spot the star was showing us. We readied for the long journey to worship the King. I felt compelled to follow the star. I needed to know for sure the significance, see for myself this King of the Jews.
( rolls up his scroll)
Let me tell you the story of what happened when we reached our destination.
We followed that star on our entire journey. A journey that took months of travel before we finally arrived in Jerusalem. Here we stopped to see King Herod. We told him how this special star we had seen in the East had led us here and inquired where we would find this newborn King of the Jews. We needed to know where we could find this king so we could worship him. It seemed strange to me that Herod looked puzzled and had to call for his Scribes – his learned men that copied the Scriptures and taught the law. But once they had talked together Herod sent us off to Bethlehem – for their prophets had said that out of lowly Judah in the town of Bethlehem would come the Christ – the governor to rule over Israel.
We were eager to continue the journey, to find the One whom this special star was leading us to. But before we could leave the palace Herod called us back and made us promise that when we found the Christ we would come back and tell him so he could worship as well.
When we left king Herod and started towards Bethlehem the star reappeared. My companions and I were overjoyed to see its presence – guiding us to find the child. We followed it to the little town of Bethlehem where it stopped right above the house where this King of the Jews was. The star had led us to the exact location.
We were here! Our journey to find the King had ended. We entered the little house and found Jesus with Mary his mother. My companions and I fell to our knees. (the wiseman could drop to his knees and present his treasure) We worshipped and presented the young King with the gifts we had brought from our far away homeland, gifts of gold, frankincense and myrrh – gifts fit for a king.
We spent time worshipping the King of the Jews but all to soon the time came for us to journey home. As we prepared to leave, we received a message from God not to go back to Herod. We listened and returned home by a different route.
I felt compelled to follow this special star, compelled to worship the King, compelled to listen to God. In return for my obedience I received such a special gift – the opportunity to see the King of Kings. The gifts we gave Him paled in comparison. The true Gift was given to us and to all mankind. Will you join me in worshipping Jesus – the King?
Where do you think the wise men came from? How many do you think there were? Why is the story included only in Matthew’s gospel? We would love to hear from you. Comment below or contact us at HopeStreamRadio
