Do you enjoy soap operas? Did you know that some Bible stories sound almost as crazy as the TV soap opera plots?

Strife and Scandal

Soap Operas feature Strife and Scandal. Head Writers for a one-hour soap opera can earn $40,000 …  per week.  I’ve got some plot ideas that might earn me that kind of big, soap opera money.  How is this for a soap opera, right out of the story of Jacob.

It starts with a pregnancy … twin boys.  The sibling rivals don’t wait till they are born – they wrestle each other in the womb, and when the alpha twin leaves the womb first, his brother reaches out and grabs his foot. Esau will trade away his whole inheritance for his brother’s soup. 

Isaac Favours Esau

Their father, Isaac, will favor Esau because for one thing, he likes the meat he cooks – nothing like red meat for male bonding. Mom will favour Jacob … he is momma’s boy. Jacob will steal his brother’s blessing by fooling his half-blind father with a phony Hallowe’en costume.

So, Esau makes plans to kill his brother. His mother then tells Jacob to go away for a few days … But a few days will turn into 20 years, and Rachel’s favorite son will never see his mother again.

Jacob on the Run

On the run, Jacob will sleep in the wild, with dirt for a mattress and a rock for a pillow.  Angels will interrupt his sleep and Hotel Wilderness will turn into the House of God. Having cheated his brother twice, Jacob will get swindled by an evil uncle, not once, not twice, not even three times, but sixteen times.

The Romantic Angle

For the romantic angle, Jacob will fall in love, at first sight, with a girl named Lambie Pie.  (That’s right, that is what Rebekah’s name means.) He will impress her with some huge weight-lifting, then work seven years for the right to marry her, only to find out he needs to work another seven years.

Though he only loves Rachel, to make it a good soap opera, he will end up with four wives, two of whom are his slaves. The wife who gives him the most children – Leah – he does not love. The wife he does love – Rachel – cannot give him any children for the first twenty years of their marriage.

The Money Angle

We need a money angle, so Jacob will become fabulously wealthy after being pretty much a slave for two decades. Then, when he is surrounded with plenty of wives, children, servants, livestock and money, he will decide to go home and face his brother … who wanted to kill him.

Now that is a “Soap Opera”. Soap Operas were called that because most of the advertisers were soap companies.  What soap could clean up Jacob’s mess? God’s Grace. No matter how messed up our lives are, God can rescue our lives by his grace.

Soap Opera Clean Up for You and Me

Here is the Soap Opera mess and cleanup for you and me in 2 verses, Colossians 1:21 and 22 –

“You, who once were alienated and hostile in mind, doing evil deeds” – Soap Opera stars – “(You) he has now reconciled in his body of flesh by his death, in order to present you holy and blameless and above reproach before him.” 

Psalm 51:7 states,

“Purify me from my sins, and I will be clean; wash me, and I will be whiter than snow.”
