Recommiting to Prayer as We Age.

Recommitting to prayer is something that we can do as we age. Steph explains how this becomes more important as we mature as believers.

All I Can Do is Pray

As Paul said to the Thessalonians,

“Rejoice always, pray without ceasing, give thanks in all circumstances; for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus for you. Do not quench the Spirit. Do not despise prophecies, but test everything; hold fast what is good. Abstain from every form of evil” (1 Thessalonians 5:16-22 ESV) (emphasis mine).

How many times have you heard, “All’s I can do is pray”? Perhaps you’ve said this yourself when approached with a ministry opportunity.

But if we really do spend regular time in the Lord’s presence, seeking Him on behalf of others (and ourselves), think of what an amazing opportunity this truly is.

Do We Take Prayer For Granted?

If we’ve been believers for years, decades even, we may take prayer for granted. Of course, we’re supposed to pray. The pages of Scripture refer to prayer time and time again. Often, when something is well-known, it loses its power to wow us. And that can be the way it is with prayer.

We take it for granted. We “say our prayers” and get on with our day. And if we’re honest, we sometimes think, “Do my prayers really make a difference?”.

It’s crucial that we “study to show ourselves approved,” as it says in 2 Timothy 2:15. And when we study the topic of prayer throughout God’s Word, it’s humbling, challenging, and encouraging.

The Veil

Because of what the Lord Jesus did for us by dying and rising again, the veil that separated us from the Holy of Holies, separated us from the Father, was torn in two. (This is my favourite portion of the scriptural account of the crucifixion.)

God invites us into the throne room of heaven to bring our praise, thanksgiving, requests, concerns, and fears to Him. The Creator of the universe Himself welcomes us into His presence through faith in the Son, who secured salvation for all who would believe.

So, when we’re tempted to say, “I can only pray,” we should consciously drop the word only and marvel at what a privilege prayer truly is.

Praying For You

Think of the times someone has told you they’ve been praying for you. How did it make you feel? If you’re like me, it was humbling and encouraging. Plus, we can bless those who pray for us by updating them on how the Lord has been at work in our lives.

This side of heaven will we understand the differences our prayers have made? We won’t. However, when we obey God’s command to “pray without ceasing,” we can rest assured that the Lord had a purpose for giving us the command and He will work it out for our good and the good of others.

Today, let’s enter His presence with reverence and rejoice that our great God welcomes us with open arms and a listening ear.
