Perceptions and Misconceptions.
Perceptions and misconceptions can be avoided if we take time to research the truth. Carol compares the knowledge or her province with the Bible.
Saskatoon, Saskatchewan
I live in the province of Saskatchewan and the city of Saskatoon. Saskatchewan is a difficult word for many people to say. Put the city and the province together and it is bound to confuse some. It can be humorous to hear the various attempts at pronunciation. Newcomers to this province have a struggle, at times, to get their tongues around speaking the name of their new location.
Beyond the difficulty of pronunciation of the name of our province, many people have the perception that we live in a flat, boring place because of endless prairie landscapes. One of my daughters met a teacher from eastern Canada who taught his students what the text book said, Saskatchewan is all prairie and argued with her when she tried to tell him differently.
The Cypress Hills
Yet reality is far different than these perceptions. Cypress Hills offers the highest elevation of land outside of the Rocky Mountains and it is located in southwestern Saskatchewan. We have badlands in Southern Saskatchewan that became hiding places for outlaws of the old west. The far north of our province is part of the Canadian Shield with many lakes, rivers, and forest.
I’ve lived far enough north in this beautiful province to be where the trees are shorter than the power poles and not much further north the forest peters out at the edge of the tundra. Even on the prairies there are rolling hills along with the flatness where you feel like you can see forever.
Perceptions and Misconceptions Based on Speculation
Perceptions and misconceptions, based on speculation or a limited knowledge, cause others to believe a false view of this part of Canada. Unless they visit our province for themselves and travel from north to south and east to west they will continue to be misled by limited study of the landscape.
Do We Study the Scriptures For Ourselves?
Do we assume we know what God’s Word says but don’t take time to study it for ourselves? Do we base our views of God’s plan and will for our lives on feelings or the facts of Scripture? Do we believe statements people say are from the Bible but never check it out for ourselves? These are questions we each can ask ourselves so we do not get caught in believing false perceptions and forming misconceptions.
A Selection From Psalm 119
Psalm 119 talks a lot about paying attention to The Bible and learning to love and value it. Some of the verses include:
11 I have hidden your word in my heart, that I might not sin against you.
12 Praise be to you, O Lord; teach me your decrees.
13 With my lips I recount all the laws that come from your mouth
14 I rejoice in following your statutes as one rejoices in great riches.
15 I meditate on your precepts and consider your ways
16 I delight in your decrees; I will not neglect your word.
105 Your word is a lap to my feet and a light for my path.
130 The unfolding of your words gives light; it gives understanding to the simple.
133 Direct my footsteps according to your word; let no sin rule over me.
103 How sweet are your words to my taste, sweeter than honey to my mouth!
Get To Know What God’s Word Says
We have perceptions about many things in life, some because of limited knowledge. May we spend time getting to know what God’s Word tells us as we read our Bibles, memorize verses, and believe the truth instead of misconceptions due to a lack of study.
