Giving Thanks: Rediscovering Gratitude.
Giving thanks should be a natural outward expression of the gratitude we have in our hearts. We are richly blessed by God and should be thankful.

A “Thankful For” List
If you were to start a list of everything you’re thankful for, where would you begin? Would your list start with the people in your life; their love, kindness, and the ways they’ve supported you? Or would it begin with the things you have, the comforts and possessions that make life easier? Would making a list such as this cause you to think about how thankful you really are? Are you a thankful person?
Think back to childhood; do you remember being taught to say “thank you” as a simple courtesy? Whether it was for something big or small, expressing gratitude was encouraged. But as life gets busy, do we sometimes forget?
It’s easy to fall into the rhythm of daily routines, where good things come our way and we barely pause to acknowledge them. Over time, we become so used to receiving thatwe forget to express thankfulness.
Gratitude is Vital
Gratitude plays a vital role in our overall wellbeing. In the midst of daily pressures and personal challenges, it’s easy to become inward-focused and overlook the value of a thankful mindset. Yet, cultivating gratitude can shift our perspective; helping usrecognize the good already present in our lives.
When we make a conscious effort to be thankful, we often discover a deeper sense of contentment and a renewed appreciation for what we have.
Taking for Granted
If we stopped to reflect, we’d likely realize just how much we take for granted. Compared to much of the world, we live in extraordinary abundance.
According to the World Population Review, 10% of the global population lives in extreme poverty, and 60% in moderate poverty. For many of us in affluent societies, it’s hard to grasp what “daily survival” truly means. We walk into grocery stores and fill our carts—not just with what we need, but often with far more. Food is plentiful, accessible, and expected.
And it’s not just food. Consider clothing: according to circularfashionla.com, up to 85% of items donated to thrift stores end up in landfills or incinerators. Meanwhile, ‘OurWorld in Data’ reports that 700 million people worldwide cannot meet their basic needsfor clothing, food, and shelter.

Deep Sense of Appreciation
These are staggering realities. How can we not feel a deep sense of appreciation when we recognize how much we have, and how little so many others have?Indeed, we have much to be thankful for.
In the Bible, it was John the Baptist who said, “No one can have anything unless God gives it.” (Good News Translation). That’s a perspective changer! What he said goes two ways;
1. What you have is only because God has allowed you to have it.
2. What you do not have is because God has withheld it from you. It’s profoundly humbling to realize that everything we have is a gift from God. Yet there is one gift He offers that surpasses all others—something only He can give and never withholds from anyone: the gift of salvation through Jesus Christ.
For God so loved the world that He gave His one and only Son, that whoever believes in Him
shall not perish but have eternal life. -John 3:16
Jesus suffered and died to pay the penalty for our sins, and this salvation is freely offered to
anyone; by grace, through faith. From personal experience, I can say I never truly understood thankfulness until I received Jesus as my Lord and Savior. When I repented, asked for forgiveness, and became a child of God, I discovered a deep, humble gratitude:
- Thankful that my sins are forgiven and my eternity is secure in Christ.
- Thankful for the purpose He’s given me in this life and the promise of His eternal plan.
- Thankful that every blessing, material and spiritual, is given according to His sovereign
will, for my good and His glory.
If you have not received God’s gift of eternal life, I pray you seek Him. Jesus died and rose again
for you. Though sin separates us from God, His grace offers deliverance; and He did it all
because of His love for us. His desire is to plant the seed of life in you, so your life may bear a
harvest of blessing, bringing glory and thanksgiving to Him.
