Bible Journaling.

Bible journaling is a popular activity for many people. Carol shares some of her experiences, and benefits she has received from journaling.

Bible journaling

What is Bible Journaling?

We hear a lot about Bible journaling. There are Bibles with larger blank spaces at the edges to write notes, draw something that spoke to you from those verses, or use stickers to represent things you are learning. I don’t draw, even though one of my Bibles gives me that opportunity as well as places to colour in small pictures already printed by passages of Scripture.

I have underlined, highlighted, and jotted bits of notes in my Bibles for a good part of my life. Looking back, it gives me the opportunity to refresh my memory about what specific verses meant to me then, or notes that help remind me of the meaning of words.

A Giant Bible Journaling Page

Yet, in a sense I did a giant Bible journaling page in response to my daughter, Amee’s, request for a pattern she could latch hook to be a memory of special Bible verses.

Since making letters on a yarn project like she planned, were difficult to have come out well, I needed to draw things that represented those verses. I am not an artist and drawing these items and putting them on graph paper intimidated me. I could visualize what we wanted but could it translate onto paper, graph paper grid, and then to a yarn wall hanging?

The picture had the cross as the central focus for without Jesus’ sacrifice on the cross to take our places, all else means nothing.

There is a path leading from an open Bible to the cross. Psalm 119: 105 says,

“Thy word is a lamp unto my feet and a light unto my path.”

A Crown on the Cross

There is a crown on the cross for in Philippians 2: 10,11 we are told that at the name of Jesus every knee shall bow and every tongue confess that He is Lord. He is the king of kings. I Timothy 6: 14b & 15 says,

“until the appearing of our Lord Jesus Christ, which God will bring about in his own time – God, the blessed and only Ruler, the King of kings and Lord of lords.”

Music Notes and a Keyboard

Music notes and a keyboard represent the many verses that talk about praising the Lord. Psalm 150 is a full psalm of praising with our voices and musical instruments. Even when life is tough there are things to praise God for as we remember all his benefits – Psalm 103.

The tree growing by the stream of water with the grass beside it reminds me of a variety of scriptures including the best-known passage of Psalm 23 where God leads us beside still waters and feeds us in the green pastures. Psalm 1: 1-3 says,

“Blessed is the man who does not walk in the counsel of the wicked; or stand in the way of sinners, or sit in the seat of mockers. But his delight is in the law of the Lord, and on his law he meditates day and night. He is like a tree planted by streams of water which yields its fruit in season and whose leaf does not wither. Whatever he does prospers.”

The Cross on the Hill

The cross sits on a hill of rocks for God is our refuge, our rock, and our salvation. Psalm 62: 1, 2 says,

“My soul finds rest in God alone- my salvation comes from him. He alone is my rock and my salvation; he is my fortress.  I will never be shaken.”

Do You Journal?

Each time I look at the finished product that Amee made from my humble graph, I am reminded of other Bible verses and passages. It hangs in her room so she too can have those verses brought to mind. God is good and gracious and our efforts to remember his word and hide it in our hearts (Psalm 119: 11) is an inspiration and a challenge to continue to learn the truths of God’s Word.

Do you journal in your Bible or in a separate notebook? How does this help you remember what God is teaching you as you read His word? How creative do you get as you reflect on His truth?
