Unknown Routes With Well Known God.

Our God becomes well known to us when we trust and believe in Him. Oommen uses the example of the life of Abraham.

Faith in Action

The author of the Hebrews wrote,

By faith Abraham, when he was called, obeyed by going out to a place which he was to receive for an inheritance; and he went out, not knowing where he was going. Hebrews 11:8

Faith in action involves our willingness to take risks about our future. When we decide to obey God by faith, we do not know where we are going, what lies ahead and where we will end up. But we can take the first step only if we fully trust God who has called us. So the first step in faith is not to start walking, but to know the person who has called us out of our present situation.

Know This God

Once we know this God and experience Him in our lives, He becomes a great reality in our lives. When we decide to cast our future into God’s hand on the basis of our trust in Him, then it is a walk of obedience without concern about the consequences.

Abraham knew the God who called him personally. They were intimate in their relationship and Abraham regarded Him as the absolute reality and so he set out to the unknown. He had no idea where he was going and what He was getting into. But he knew that he was getting into God in whose hands his future was secure. He trusted in all the promises of the God who called him and believed that this God was going to give him an unseen inheritance in Heaven, the shadow of which he will enjoy here on earth.

Abraham Believed

He was able to see his future generations by faith, even when he knew it was humanly impossible for him to have any children here on earth. But Abraham believed in the God who revealed Himself to him. He got the grace to believe in this God and trusted Him to prove His might in his life in the days to come.

In a world where there was no one else who had experienced such a God, Abraham’s choice was totally by faith which required great spiritual courage and boldness.

Would You Have Believed?

Dear friend, would you have believed this God, had you been in Abraham’s position? Even after reading similar experiences of thousands of God’s people around the world, would you now be able to believe this God of Abraham? Even today, unless we receive grace, it would be difficult to believe in an invisible God. His promises sound far beyond reason.

Ordinary human minds cannot accept such promises as real. So even today faith like that of Abraham requires us to see and experience this God of Abraham. Such vision about this God can be possible only if we receive special grace which people like Moses, Noah, Job, Jacob, David, Jeremiah, Paul and others received. Their lives and experiences speak loudly to us, along with that of millions of unknown saints throughout the last several centuries.

Our Traditional Concept of God

Their lives speak eloquently to us and shake our traditional concept of God. We are today confronted by the real God of this Universe who fills the whole earth, yet is able and willing to come and live in the hearts of His children to give them the faith and grace that they need.

When He speaks to us through our conscience and His Spirit, we will be able to experience Him in our souls and spirits. His power can be experienced in our lives. His enabling power and glory can be sensed by our souls. His Spirit takes hold of our spirits to make us believe what this God can and will do in and through us.

focus

The Sole Focus and Driving Force

Such belief then becomes the sole focus and driving force in our lives to walk with this God, of Abraham, who has become our God too. His words and commandments become real and dear to us and we develop a thirst to live for this God every day of our lives.

No one who has followed this God has ever become ashamed of following Him. There is no disappointment in going to Him with our needs and aspirations. He renews our hope and trust in Him to walk into the unknown tomorrows without fret. He is the same unchanging God who can be trusted every day of our lives.

Now faith is the assurance of things hoped for, the conviction of things not seen. Hebrews 11:1 –

Thought for Today

God is unseen because the fullness of His power, strength and glory cannot be caught in the small eyes of the puny man.
