The Best Medicine – Jesus The Healer
As Brad states in today’s post: “God alone, is the healer of our souls, and has provided the only lifesaving agent, which is the blood of Jesus Christ.”
A Bandaid Solution
The last several years we’ve all seen a real growth in the amount of homeopathic services and medicines that have become available. I see new businesses cropping up regularly, even in our relatively small demographic area; wellness centers, massage, reflexology, and alternative healing options. Let’s face it, the “Baby Boomers” have always been a major economic driver, and they are now….and have been for some time, at the age where the signs of wear and tear are evident. Aspirin, Tylenol, Ibuprofen…those are pharmaceutical brands we’re all very familiar with, but medication and treatments of a more holistic nature have become increasingly popular.
Our bodies are amazing, given their ability to selfheal, from the many flus, viruses, cuts, sores and bruises that we find ourselves dealing with. Last week I was building an outdoor garden bench, securing the wooden sections with screws and my cordless drill. The drill slipped, and I felt a sharp twinge of pain, and sure enough, the mishap had opened up a small gash in my thumb. I quickly got it rinsed and wrapped it with a cloth and ice to stop the bleeding.
I continued for the next week or so, using Band-Aids and ointment, helping it to heal over. In retrospect, I could have used a couple of stitches, but it is interesting to see how the body basically took care of itself; layers of new skin slowly closing in over the opening.
Our bodies, apart from being mortally wounded, can heal themselves from many an ailment or infliction. We do of course choose medicine, whether in natural forms or chemical, to assist much of the time in the process. But the ability to have our mortal bodies healed from their own antibodies, or from modern medication, does not apply to our spiritual bodies.
God The Healer
God alone, is the healer of our souls and has provided the only lifesaving agent, which is the blood of Jesus Christ. Clearly, our physical bodies can only be doctored and remedied for so long, and they will inevitably succumb to death.
Our spiritual bodies however, are dead in trespasses and sin from the onset and are in need of healing, which equates to the lifesaving gift of salvation. And we know, of course, the “guarantee of life” that salvation brings is one that is eternal. John 3:3 says ” except a man be born again, he cannot see the kingdom of God.” The healing gift of salvation, of being born again, is effective, for our spirits to never die.
“To be absent from the body, Paul says, is to be present with the Lord. And when the thief on the cross trusted in the healing, saving power of Jesus who hung beside him, the words from our Lord gave comfort to all generations since…“today thou shalt be with me in paradise“. Not someday, but upon the death of our physical bodies…for all who trust in Christ….our souls will enter immediately into the eternal realm of heaven, and into the presence of God.
It’s sad isn’t it, that so many are investing so much of their energy, time, money, and hope…in medicines and remedies that can only prolong at best, this physical body, neglecting to consider the healing that is required for a soul that is dead in sin.
We can all be thankful that God has designed our bodies to ward off many an affliction. We can be thankful for medicines and treatments old and new, that does help us to recover from life-threatening illness or injury.
And we certainly acknowledge that our God can and does heal in miraculous ways even today, those who apart from Gods intervention would undoubtedly succumb to death. But we know it is Gods desire that all would realize the greater need of healing, and seek out healing of their souls.
He Was Wounded For Our Transgressions
Peter tells us that God is ” long suffering to usward, not willing that any should perish, but that all should come to repentance“. In God’s grace and longsuffering, he sees the physical healing that abounds, and how many does God aid in those processes, knowing that their acceptance of Christ and a spiritual healing is just around the corner for them.
As I consider my thumb, now nearly healed, I am thankful that it took care of the process itself. I am so glad, however, that I know personally…. the one who healed my soul and took care of my sin debt when he delivered up sin for all at Calvary. He bore the iniquity of all, in love….to offer the gift of real healing, once and for all to every man, woman, and child.
Isaiah tells us ” he was wounded for our transgressions, he was bruised for our iniquities; the chastisement of our peace was upon him and by his stripes we are healed”.
Real healing, the healing of our souls, in found only in the stripes, in the blood of our Lord Jesus Christ.
