Relationships That Matter.

Paul pointed out some key things that matter in his letter to the Philippians. Here, Mark gives a quick summary to his series.

A Tour Through Philippians

A heartfelt thank-you to everyone who journeyed with me through all 18 episodes of our tour through Paul’s letter to the Philippians. There’s so much more that could have been said—so many deeper layers to explore; and I encourage you to continue reading and studying this treasure trove of truth on your own. May your understanding of God’s love grow richer and more personal with each step.

We now conclude our series by reflecting on the final three verses of Philippians chapter 4, verses 21 to 23.

Give my greetings to each of God’s holy people—all who belong to Christ Jesus. The brothers who are with me send you their greetings. And all the rest of God’s people send you greetings, too, especially those in Caesar’s household. May the grace of the Lord Jesus Christ be with your spirit. Philippians 4:21-23 (NLT)

In Paul’s closing remarks to the Philippian church, it’s clear that he valued being personable and maintaining meaningful connections with the central focus always being salvation through the Lord Jesus Christ.

What does it mean to be personable and why is it important?

What Really Matters?

A continual theme that has been repeated a number of times through this series of episodes is the thought of “what really matters.” Here again I bring it up, because not only in this epistle but in all his epistles, being sociable really mattered to Paul.

Being personable is being positive. It creates a feeling of comfort, value, belonging and support. Being withdrawn and reserved, too often, can cause others to feel uncomfortable. In Colossians 3:12 Paul advises his readers that as God’s chosen people, they are to bear characteristics that reflect that; clothing themselves with relationally positive attributes of compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness and patience.

Paul’s Approach

I get the impression that Paul approached everyone mindful of the importance of having a smile, looking people in the eyes when he talked to them, and having a firm handshake. When Paul gives greetings, such as in this passage to his readers, his genuine desire to connect is felt.

Hebrews 10:24–25 highlights the importance of believers gathering together:

“Let us think of ways to motivate one another to acts of love and good works. And let us not neglect our meeting together, as some people do, but encourage one another—especially now that the day of his return is drawing near.” Hebrews 10:24-25

Alongside gathering, there’s a call to build one another up. I Thessalonians 5:11 reminds us:

“Encourage each other and build each other up, just as you are already doing.” I Thessalonians 5:11

Priorities for Paul

Meeting together and mutual encouragement were priorities for Paul. Yet in this case, he writes from prison to those he loved dearly; people he longed to see face to face.

“…it is right that I should feel as I do about all of you, for you have a special place in my heart. You share with me the special favor of God, both in my imprisonment and in defending and confirming the truth of the Good News. God knows how much I love you and long for you with the tender compassion of Christ Jesus.” Philippians 1:7,8

…and,

“I love you and long to see you, dear friends, for you are my joy and the crown I receive for my work.” Philippians 4:1

Paul’s Confinement

After reading these passionate verses, it’s clear that Paul longs deeply to be with them once more. As he sits confined in prison, his written words of love and affection are the only way he can reach out to them in that moment. But he shows that his greetings are not just about him; he pulls his partners into the light.

Those who are with him, fellow prisoners or guards who have come to faith in Christ because of his sharing the gospel in prison. He mentions ‘those of Caesar’s household,’ most likely servants in the palace who are believers with whom Paul had regular contact.

Keeping Connected

Keeping connected and letting others know you are thinking about them is important. It’s a positive feeling to have someone reach out who you may not have much connection with anymore; maybe through social media or receiving an email from them.

They tell you they’ve been thinking about you, or something happened that day that reminded them of you… Isn’t it nice to know you haven’t been forgotten?

In a local church fellowship, no one should ever feel forgotten. We should all take time to think of those who may feel this way. Send them an encouraging note, but don’t just say you are thinking about them, take the initiative to get together.

Don’t Overlook the Introductions

We often read quickly and overlook the introductions and closings of Paul’s letters, missing the depth and value they offer to the readers. There’s much to learn from the Apostle’s warm and thoughtful expressions.

During those difficult times in his life, Paul likely understood that his life could be taken at any moment because of his zealous faith. Yet his vision for the Philippians, and many others, was clear: the friendships and love he shared with fellow believers were not just for this life but would continue on into eternity. All his co-laborers would be joined with him in the presence of the Lord forever.

Paul closes this epistle putting emphasis on the one and only thing that connects them and saves them; “…the grace of the Lord Jesus Christ…”

What a beautiful last thought.

A thought that really matters.

Concluding With a Hymn

I’ll conclude with lyrics from a hymn written by Julia H. Johnston, which beautifully captures the like-minded spirit of all who know the saving grace of Christ and, like Paul, place their confidence in the glory that is to come with Him.

Marvelous, infinite, matchless grace,
Freely bestowed on all who believe!
All who are longing to see His face,
Will you this moment His grace receive?
