Success Through Christ Alone – Philippians 4:10-13.
Paul relied on Christ alone but today self-help has become a booming industry. Is there any value in this? Mark explains what the Bible says.

Self Help is Booming
Welcome to Episode 16, titled Success Through Christ Alone, in our series Lessons from Philippians: What Really Matters. I’ll be reading Philippians 4:10–13 from the New Living Translation.
How I praise the Lord that you are concerned about me again. I know you have always been concerned for me, but you didn’t have the chance to help me. Not that I was ever in need, for I have learned how to be content with whatever I have. I know how to live on almost nothing or with everything. I have learned the secret of living in every situation, whether it is with a full stomach or empty, with plenty or little. For I can do everything through Christ, who gives me strength. Philippians 4:10–13
“Self-help” is a booming industry that has experienced remarkable growth over the past decade.
According to the WordsRated website, self-help book sales increased by an average of 11% annually from 2013 to 2019—reaching a total of 18.6 million volumes. By 2025, the personal development sector is projected to be worth $14 billion. Its offerings span a wide range of formats, including webinars, online courses, podcasts, workshops, audiobooks, and infomercials.
But why? What’s driving this massive expansion?
Desperate to Improve
Maybe because people are desperately trying to improve in an ever increasingly competitive world; be it personal challenges, skills or achieving goals, they’re tired of failure and the old way of doing things. They want motivation, a boost in confidence and higher self-esteem.
How effective are self-help resources for individuals who invest in books and regularly listen to podcasts?
Concrete statistics are hard to come by, but it’s reasonable to compare their impact to that of New Year’s resolutions. According to EnterpriseAppsToday.com, only about 5% of people succeed in sticking to their personal commitments—suggesting that motivation alone may not be enough.
Are you someone who is eager to grow and succeed? Are you searching for the secret to finding true satisfaction in life?

The Secret of Being Content
In Philippians 4:12, the Apostle Paul declares that he has “learned the secret of being content.”
Wait—really? That’s a bold claim.
And this contentment is not tied to winning the lottery or landing a six-figure dream job?
Paul, we need to know more. What’s your secret?
But Paul isn’t coy. He’s not teasing us with a cliffhanger or selling a solution on the Philippi Home Shopping Channel. This isn’t a slick, delayed reveal—it’s real.
The truth is there’s no formula or five-step plan for uncovering his secret.
It’s not something attained through hard work or effort alone.
Contentment, Paul insists, comes from something much deeper.
Counting Losses
In chapter three, Paul discusses “counting his losses,” considering all he had achieved before his conversion as garbage compared to gaining Christ. He denied himself and turned from his life. He counted the cost and began living through his salvation in the Lord Jesus.
In our last episode, we explored how Paul urged his readers to reject worldly, flesh-driven thinking.
Instead, he encouraged us to shift our focus away from ourselves and toward what is righteous and spiritual in nature—making God and our faith in Him the solution to every problem we face.
- Don’t panic – pray.
- Don’t be thoughtless – be thankful.
- Think on good things – not garbage.

Psychology of Peace Through Christ Alone
This is Paul’s school on the psychology of peace.
Paul depended absolutely and completely in Christ. He didn’t measure his success or reputation upon his social standing or his state of need, but upon his trust level in Christ.
Verse 13 says, “… I can do everything through Christ, who gives me strength.”
The Lord Jesus became the manager and preserver of Paul’s life.
“It is not that we think we are qualified to do anything on our own. Our qualification comes from God.” 2 Corinthians 3:5
Unlocking the Door to True Success
What unlocks the door to true success, enduring wealth, vibrant health, and lasting love?
The world certainly has its theories—relentless hustle, razor-sharp instincts, or an elusive kind of brilliance only a lucky few seem to possess. It’s the classic, “survival of the fittest,” way of thinking.
In contrast to the ruthless world, the Lord Jesus offers us an abundant life, not with an abundance of material possessions or in the way the world gives, but a life full of His abundant spiritual blessings.
He alone provides us the strength to be resilient and resourceful in times of scarcity, and the peace to remain grounded even in seasons of abundance.
“Yet true godliness with contentment is itself great wealth.” 1 Timothy 6:6
The Psalmist writes,
“Give your burdens to the LORD, and he will take care of you.” Psalm 55:22
Paul expresses his appreciation for the Philippian churches’ desire to help him in meeting his material needs, but he assures them that he is well, that the Lord is his sustainer. May we learn what Paul has learned in the school of faith; the secret to contentment – growing in a dependence on the Lord and less dependence in ourselves or what the world has to offer.
Dependence on Christ Alone
Have you been lured into the “self-help” industry?
Have you bought into the idea that personal improvement and growth come from humanistic teachings that emphasize self-confidence, success, and a fulfilled life through your own power and determination? That it’s all about mind over matter?
Reject these vain philosophies and embrace the secret to living that Paul found: a life lived in and through Christ.
I’ll conclude this episode with three verses to encourage us and further highlight our need for dependence on Christ.
“By his divine power, God has given us everything we need for living a godly life. We have received all of this by coming to know him, the one who called us to himself by means of his marvelous glory and excellence.” 2 Peter 1:3
“The thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy. I came that they may have life and have it abundantly.” John 10:10 (ESV)
“… I am the vine; you are the branches. Those who remain in me, and I in them, will produce much fruit. For apart from me you can do nothing.” John 15:5
