Be Joyful. Be Rooted. Be Watchful Part-9; Philippians 3:1-3.
To be joyful, rooted and watchful are important characteristics of a faithful Christian. Mark explains the first 3 verses in Philippians.

Three Things
In his letter to the church at Philippi, Paul said the following,
Whatever happens, my dear brothers and sisters, rejoice in the Lord. I never get tired of telling you these things, and I do it to safeguard your faith. Watch out for those dogs, those people who do evil, those mutilators who say you must be circumcised to be saved. For we who worship by the Spirit of God are the ones who are truly circumcised. We rely on what Christ Jesus has done for us. We put no confidence in human effort… (Philippians 3:1-3 NLT)
This passage forms the foundation of Episode 9 in our series, titled Be Joyful. Be Rooted. Be Watchful.
There are three things that Paul points out in this passage of scripture that needs to be engrained in the life of every believer in Christ;
- A good attitude
- Consistency
- Watchfulness
Let’s take a look at the importance of each one.
Having a Good Attitude
First; having a good attitude.
“Whatever happens… rejoice in the Lord.”
Eleven times in this epistle the word “rejoice” is used.
“I will rejoice… you should rejoice… rejoice in the Lord… I say it again – rejoice!” Having continual joy was important, as the backdrop to this epistle the saints in Philippi were facing many challenges as a church;
- Philippians 1:27-30 they were facing persecution.
- Philippians 3:2 There was always the concern of the possibility of false teachers and doctrines creeping in.
- Philippians 4:2 They were grappling with internal conflicts and disagreements among fellow believers.

Mustering Strength
Let’s be honest, it’s tough to look past all the things that cause us discouragement, anxiety, upset and lose sight on what really matters. Mustering the strength to focus on Jesus, to gain a heavenly perspective on everything happening around us and finding genuine joy in the midst of it all, can be a challenge. When all the negatives that surround us feel all-encompassing, finding the stamina to rejoice might seem impossible.
We need the reminder that as children of God, our salvation is secure, with a hope and an eternal future, remembering that God has plans for us individually and for His local churches.
For I know the plans I have for you,” says the LORD. “They are plans for good and not for disaster, to give you a future and a hope. Jeremiah 29:11
The Light of Christ
As hard as it may get, there is always the light of Christ in our lives to hold onto, and that is a cause for us to rejoice in Him. It’s not a fleeting happiness but a steadfast joy that anchors our soul, even in the darkest of trials.
The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness can never extinguish it. John 1:5
And now, dear brothers and sisters, one final thing. Fix your thoughts on what is true, and honorable, and right, and pure, and lovely, and admirable. Think about things that are excellent and worthy of praise. Philippians 4:8
A spiritually healthy outlook, mindful of the Lord’s blessings and sovereignty, can greatly help us face life’s challenges.
Consistency and Repetition
This brings us to the second point in verse 1: consistency and the need for repetition. Paul didn’t hesitate to repeat the same messages to his followers, and we too should not grow weary of hearing God’s Word, even when it covers familiar content or themes. If we encounter the same messages repeatedly, it might be a sign to pay attention, perhaps the Holy Spirit is sending that repetitive message our way for a reason.
The self-discipline of a daily habit in meditating on God’s Word and spending time alone with Him in prayer is a “safeguard to our faith.” The more we are immersed in truth, the more it will be integrated into our lives. This is crucial for the reason Paul addresses in verse two, our third point, be watchful:
Watch out! Are we on guard against opposition or discerning enough not to be deceived by false teachings? How do we prepare ourselves?

Immersed in the Word of God
By immersing ourselves in the Word of God, we greatly increase our chances of being equipped with the full armor of God.
Be strong in the Lord and in his mighty power. Put on all of God’s armor so that you will be able to stand firm against all strategies of the devil. For we are not fighting against flesh-and-blood enemies, but against evil rulers and authorities of the unseen world, against mighty powers in this dark world, and against evil spirits in the heavenly places. Therefore, put on every piece of God’s armor so you will be able to resist the enemy in the time of evil. Then after the battle you will still be standing firm. Stand your ground, putting on the belt of truth and the body armor of God’s righteousness. For shoes, put on the peace that comes from the Good News so that you will be fully prepared. In addition to all of these, hold up the shield of faith to stop the fiery arrows of the devil. Put on salvation as your helmet, and take the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God. Pray in the Spirit at all times and on every occasion. Stay alert and be persistent in your prayers for all believers everywhere. Ephesians 6:10-18
Sometimes, the most deceptive teachings do not come from the outside world into the church, but unfortunately from within the fellowship itself.
When Paul wrote this epistle, the teachings of the New Testament were still new and often controversial, challenging both Jews and Gentiles alike. Many wrestled with the idea that salvation by grace through faith left no room for human striving, religious rituals, or traditional practices. The inclination to rely on personal initiative to please God is deeply rooted in us, and religion often appeals to that instinct.
However, when we are spiritually tuned to the voice of truth, we won’t be led astray by deceptive teachings. That kind of discernment is only made possible through a solid grounding in God’s Word and the empowering presence of the Holy Spirit.
Watchfulness
Our three points: A good attitude. Consistency. Watchfulness.
We need to be continually encouraging one another in these things, and reminding one another of all the Lord has done, is doing, and what He promised to do.
Rejoice together!
Spur one another on in the healthy habit to be regularly reading, studying and hearing His Word; and as sometimes repetitious as it may seem, never tire of it, and be open to applying it. Rooting yourself in the faith is often the result of consistency.
We need to be a help to one another and on the watch for those “deceptive dogs” of damaging doctrine.
Our walk of faith becomes much easier when we journey alongside our church family—our brothers and sisters in Christ. The yoke of fellowship we share in Him helps lighten the heavy burdens we carry—and that’s what truly matters!
