A Key Piece is Missing

You know that feeling when you’re putting something together, and then you realize a key piece is missing? After all that effort, you’re stuck. Frustrating, right? No matter how much you try, you just can’t finish what you started.

It’s like working on a massive puzzle, placing piece after piece, only to discover that some are missing—pieces you search for tirelessly but never seem to find.

Something is Missing

Many people feel this way about life. As they push through each day, there’s an underlying sense that something is missing, that there is meaning to be found, yet the answer to what it is stays elusive.

Do you feel this way? That there is something much bigger, a greater purpose to life yet unattainable in your own limited capacity to grasp?

I understand what you’re feeling—for many years, I searched for that missing piece. As I grew up, I had a deep longing for meaning in my life. I knew something was missing, but I couldn’t quite put my finger on it. So, I sought answers through various sources and experiences.

Drawn to Spiritual Things

From a young age, I felt drawn to spiritual things. I was deeply religious—attending church, eagerly reading books, and pursuing a sincere interest in God. Yet, despite my devotion, I remained unfulfilled, always searching for something more.

As an introverted teen, I came to realize the importance of friendships and social connections. I sought fulfillment through a sense of belonging and popularity, hoping it would fill the void—but it didn’t. The longing remained.

I immersed myself in music, art, and philosophical thought, searching for answers. Surely, somewhere in the lyrics, the imagery, or a new way of thinking, I would uncover the truth I was searching for. But instead, my longing only grew stronger, and the answer remained just out of reach.

At times, I wondered if this was simply the nature of life—that our purpose was to give our best, love deeply, and hope that, in the end, we find some sense of fulfillment. That, in some way, something we do will resonate with the divine.

A Sense of Searching

I knew I wasn’t alone in my feelings—many others have expressed the same sense of searching. The popular pop/rock band U2, dominant from the ’80s through the early 2000s, captured this sentiment in their chart-topping hit “I Still Haven’t Found What I’m Looking For.”

The lyrics speak of extraordinary human accomplishments and experiences yet still leave the singer in a state of longing—an unquenchable pursuit for something more, for meaning, for purpose. No matter how profound or moving the experience, it was never enough. The feeling didn’t last.

How many other songs, poems, or stories have echoed this same deep yearning?

Is this longing an endless, lifelong search—an emptiness that maybe some manage to fill, while others never do?

Fill the Void

I’ve shared some of the things I explored in my pursuit of meaning, but I feel fortunate that I didn’t turn to the same methods many of my peers did attempting to fill the void they felt—things like sex, parties, drugs, alcohol, career obsession, and perfectionism, to name just a few.

There are countless ways people try to fill the emptiness they feel. Some honestly seek solutions, hoping to find meaning or fulfillment, while others simply strive to mask or ignore the feeling, avoiding it rather than pursuing it.

What are you turning to in an attempt to quiet your inner longing?

Is there truly one definitive solution—something that can bring lasting peace to everyone searching for that missing piece in their lives?

Yes. Absolutely. It is Jesus Christ.

Lonely and Depressed

As I entered my twenties, I found myself at a low point in life. Many of my hopes and aspirations were slipping away, leaving me feeling lonely and depressed. The sense that something was missing grew stronger than ever, yet the answer to my inner struggle felt more unattainable.

Through a series of circumstances, I came face to face with the answer to what I had been missing—JESUS CHRIST. Though I was religious, prayed, and read the bible, I had never been truly confronted with certain raw truths, such as:

  1. All people are sinners. We are all on a level playing field. There is no one better than anyone else. We all fall short of God’s expectations (Romans 3:23). And we don’t “become sinners;” we are born this way (Psalm 51:5, John 3:18).
  2. Death is connected to sin. The result of the original sin was eventual physical death and also spiritual death (Romans 6:23). Our sin is an offence to God; therefore, it separates us from Him, and the place designed for those separated is hell.
  3. We need a savior. The reality of sin and death places everyone in a state of hopelessness. In my desire to gain God’s attention and earn His favor, religion taught me to do good, love others, and treat them better than myself. But how much is enough? How could I ever be sure?

The End of Your Life

Is it fair to come to the end of your life only to hear that you didn’t quite earn a place in heaven? I needed help—something or SOMEONE to face my sin and break the power of spiritual death that was set against me (Colossians 2:13,14).

  • Jesus Christ: Personal Saviour and Sacrifice. Religion never explained why Jesus died on the cross or how it applied to me personally. To me, He was nothing more than a martyr and a great religious teacher. The truth of who He was—why He came into this world—was muddied until my eyes were opened.

Relationship, Not Religion

I came to realize Jesus was God (John 1:1, 14) and became a man to be the Saviour of the world (John 4:42). He came to die, shedding His blood as the sacrifice for the sins of humanity (Hebrews 9:22). Rising from the dead, He displayed His victory over sin and death.

Anyone who puts their trust in Him, recognizing Him as their personal Savior—acknowledging that He died in their place—will receive the free gift of salvation and new life (2 Corinthians 5:17).

  • Relationship, not religion. The life that Jesus freely gives is one of union with Him. For all who believe, the Holy Spirit dwells within, fostering intimate communication and connection with their Savior. Becoming a follower of Jesus marks the beginning of a completely new perspective on life and eternity. While religion involves striving to earn God’s approval—working one’s way to heaven—faith in Jesus is a relationship with the One whose sacrifice was accepted by God. It is in His work on the cross that we place our trust not our own (Ephesians 2:8-9).
  • Only Jesus, period. Jesus said, “I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me.” The salvation Jesus offers is neither available nor possible through any of the world’s religions—it is found exclusively in Him. Many reject this truth, believing it to be narrow-minded, but this is precisely what the Bible teaches.

Acts 4:12 says it clearly,

“Salvation is found in no one else, for there is no other name under heaven given to mankind by which we must be saved.”

Do Not be Deceived

The world insists that all religious paths lead to the same destination—some version of heaven. But do not be deceived. While all religious paths may indeed lead to the same end, that destination is not heaven—it is hell; eternal separation from God.

My desperate search finally ended when I received Jesus Christ as my personal Lord and Savior. Now, my soul is at peace. I trust in His unfailing love and rest in the assurance that His grace is enough (Ephesians 1:13,14).

Are you ready to end YOUR search and find true peace with God?

Still Searching? Don’t Lose Heart

If you’re still searching, don’t lose heart—He is near, and He will reveal Himself to those who seek Him.

Acts 17:17 beautifully expresses the availability and our accessibility of God this way;

“that all people would seek after Him and perhaps feel their way toward Him and find Him—though He is not far from anyone.”

I remember my own journey of ‘feeling my way toward God’—a path I now look back on with great joy and deep gratitude for the way He received me with open arms.

Please take to heart the following bible verses:

God offers this assurance to those who turn to Him:

“Then you will call on me and come and pray to me, and I will listen to you. You will seek me and find me when you seek me with all your heart.” -Jeremiah 29:12,13

Jesus promise to us is this:

“So I say to you: Ask and it will be given to you; seek and you will find; knock and the door will be opened to you. For everyone who asks receives; the one who seeks finds; and to the one who knocks, the door will be opened.” -Luke 11:9,10

The Book of Life

All things considered, I want to emphasize that the Bible tells us there is a book in heaven called the Book of Life, where the names of all who believe in Jesus are written (Revelation 20:15, 21:27).

If you admit to the feeling that something is missing in your life and you have not yet placed your faith in Jesus, then please consider how this longing is because YOUR name is missing in that book. Jesus wants to give eternal life to those who seek Him.

Seek Jesus

My hope and prayer is that you won’t wait or keep searching for temporary ways to numb the emptiness inside. Seek Jesus and trust in Him—only He can truly fill that void and bridge the gap between your sin and a holy God.

Romans 10:9,10 states,

“…if you confess with your mouth that Jesus is Lord and believe in your heart that God raised Him from the dead, you will be saved. For with the heart, one believes and is justified, and with the mouth one confesses and is saved.”

Paul said in Romans 10:13

“… everyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved.”

John the disciple stated,

“For God so loved the world, that He gave His only Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have eternal life.” John 3:16
