Jesus is the Only way to God

At times Jesus was very direct and blunt. Listen to what He said about salvation through Him alone.

Jesus answered, “I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me.
John 14:6

Many people think that there is more than one way to God. We often hear people say things like “Don’t be so arrogant! There are many different paths to God!” However, that is clearly not what Jesus said. He was very clear that there is only one way and that is through Him. His death and resurrection prove that He is uniquely qualified to make such a statement.

Peter, one of Jesus’ disciples was confident that this statement by Jesus was true. He added,

Salvation is found in no one else, for there is no other name under heaven given to mankind by which we must be saved.
Acts 4:12

If you are trying to find your way to heaven by any other means, you are in direct contradiction with what the Word of God states.

We Are Sinners and Need a Saviour

We don’t like to be told that we are sinners – but God says we are. The Apostle Paul wrote the following in his letter to the Romans.

For all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God,
Romans 3:23

When we sin, we miss the mark – God’s standard. His standard is perfection and none of us can possibly meet it. That is a sobering thought. Thankfully Paul also had some good news to go along with the bad. He also says,

For the wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.
Romans 6:23

I enjoy getting gifts. In fact, who doesn’t! God has a gift for us. A gift unlike any other. It is a gift that no-one else can give. The gift is eternal life. Don’t turn your back on the gift. Accept this wonderful gift that only God can provide.

Sometimes we like to take gifts back to the store and exchange them for something else. You will never want to exchange this gift. It is not like any other. You cannot find it anywhere else. Why choose death when you can have eternal life?

Christ is our Holy, Sinless, Perfect Sacrifice

For millenia, people all around the world have offered up sacrifices to try and appease their false gods. These sacrifices accomplish nothing. The only sacrifice that can take away our sins is Jesus. He is the perfect, holy, sinless sacrifice that takes away the punishment for our sin.

Paul said,

God made him who had no sin to be sin for us, so that in him we might become the righteousness of God. II Corinthians 5:21

Only a sinless sacrifice could take away our sin. No one else could take my place, because as we have already shown, we are all sinners. We are all guilty – except Jesus. He is our sinless sacrifice. Through Him we are made righteous. That means that we are brought into a right relationship with God. That is what being made righteous means. Without Jesus, we are unrighteousness and cannot enter God’s heaven. The writer of the book of Hebrews said this,

For we do not have a high priest who is unable to empathize with our weaknesses, but we have one who has been tempted in every way, just as we are—yet he did not sin.
Hebrews 4:15

Jesus understands what it is to be human. He lived a life here on earth. He had times of great joy and pleasure. He also was betrayed, mistreated, mocked, beaten and nailed to a cross. He understands the highs and lows of what it is to be human. Nevertheless, He did not sin. I cannot imagine enduring what He did without sinning.

I can’t get through a day or even an hour without doing, saying or thinking something that breaks God’s holy laws. But Jesus went an entire life without sinning. That is what qualifies Him to be our Saviour. Trust Him. He can be your high priest, your representative before God the Father because He meets God’s standards, God’s requirements.

Christ’s Death Pays the Price For Our Sin

God loves us and sent His Son, Jesus to die for us. This took place long before we were born, but the truth is as fresh today as it was 2 millenia ago. Jesus died for us. Here it is for you to read in black and white,

But God demonstrates his own love for us in this: While we were still sinners, Christ died for us.
Romans 5:8

There is no need for us to suffer for our sins. There is also no way that we can pay for our sins. The way is the one provided by our loving God.

Peter saw what happened to Jesus. He was there when Jesus was arrested. He saw the resurrected Jesus. He knows that Jesus suffered for us, and He did this to bring us to God. Peter said,

For Christ also suffered once for sins, the righteous for the unrighteous, to bring you to God. He was put to death in the body but made alive in the Spirit.
I Peter 3:18

The punishment that we deserve for our sins was dealt with in the body of Jesus in the cross. He is my substitute. He is your substitute. There is no need for us to suffer for our sins. Simply trust that God has provided a way of escape for you and put your faith in the death and resurrection of Jesus.

Our Salvation is By God’s Grace, Through Faith in Jesus

Throughout history people have tried to make up for their sins by doing things to please God. The only thing we can do to please God is to put our faith and our trust in the salvation that He has provided – Jesus. God’s plan of salvation is the only way. Our plans amount to nothing. Read what it says in the Epistle that Paul wrote to the Ephesian church,

For it is by grace you have been saved, through faith—and this is not from yourselves, it is the gift of God— not by works, so that no one can boast.
Ephesians 2:8-9

Do you see any room there for getting to heaven by being a good person? It is impossible based on this text. That is clearly not what God says. Our salvation is a gift provided by God. By faith we receive it. We change our way of thinking and say, “OK God, I realize that I cannot do anything to achieve my salvation except trust You.”

For many people the moment of salvation comes when they openly pray to God and tell Him what they have come to believe.

Paul said,

If you declare with your mouth, “Jesus is Lord,” and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved. For it is with your heart that you believe and are justified, and it is with your mouth that you profess your faith and are saved.
Romans 10:9-10

Do you believe this? Do you believe that Jesus is Lord and that God raised Him from the dead? If you do, tell Him! Speak to Him! Let Him know that you believe! We can talk to God. That is what prayer is – talking to God. Talk to Him and tell Him that you believe in His plan of salvation for you. God will provide you with peace and comfort in your heart. Once you have taken that step of faith He will never let you go.

Christians Live for Christ

What do Christians do? I am often told that a Christian life must be boring. How can a Christian have any fun in life? Isn’t being a Christian a boring life?

As I write this I have been a Christian for 55 years. I can assure you that my life has been anything but boring. Following Christ is challenging, but it can also be exciting, fulfilling and rewarding. I have always found that to be the case.

Nevertheless, Jesus does call us to live a life that is different from society’s norms. There are things I chose to do and things I chose not to do as a follower of Christ.

Listen to what Pauls said,

I have been crucified with Christ and I no longer live, but Christ lives in me. The life I now live in the body, I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me and gave himself for me.
Galatians 2:20

A Christian chooses to live a different life. A Christian puts His old way of life to death, just as Jesus was put to death. If at times it means that we are brought into opposition to the world, so be it. The world did not save me. Jesus did. He loved me and gave Himself for me. Therefore, as a Christian I chose to love Him in return and give my life to Him.

Paul put it like this in a letter to the Roman church,

The death he died, he died to sin once for all; but the life he lives, he lives to God.
In the same way, count yourselves dead to sin but alive to God in Christ Jesus.
Romans 6:10-11

A Christian chooses to be dead to sin, and alive to God. This marks a Christian’s lifestyle. This guides the choices he makes. The Christian chooses to follow Jesus, not a world that is full of sin.
